“Autism has a profound impact on Missouri families and this critical funding will help raise awareness about Autism and provide greater treatment options to better the lives of Missouri children,” Gov. Blunt said. “Most of us know someone with an Autistic child, and these parents can tell you how important a place such as the Thompson Center is and how important this funding can be in the fight against Autism.”
“With the incidence of autism increasing dramatically in recent years, more and more Missouri families are seeking help in dealing with this challenging disorder. The Thompson Center is doing admirable and innovative work to help children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders. It is important that we provide them with the funding to continue that effort and I thank Governor Blunt for his support in signing this bill into law,” Rep. Ed Robb said.
House Bill 2023 designates $5 million for planning, design, renovation, construction and/or purchase of a facility for the Thompson Center. This appropriation ensures that the Thompson Center has the resources and necessary tools to continue the life-changing work being performed and will benefit countless Missouri families. The Thompson Center for Autism was established in April 2005 to promote research, teaching and service innovations to help improve the lives of children with Autism and other neurological conditions.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is the 6th most prevalent disability and the second most common developmental disability in the United States. Missouri currently serves more than 4,200 young Missourians with an ASD diagnosis across their lifespan.
Last year Gov. Blunt secured of $3.9 million in additional state funding to focus on improvements to Autism treatment and diagnosis. The legislation provided:
